The invasion!!

Well, despite our fun nick-names for our 3 girls.. you'd never know that our oldest is absolutely terrified of insects and bugs. So the 19th year of Cicada cycle 'Brood X' is due this spring/summer. Emily and I have talked about it quietly worried about reactions, or how bad we'd lose our mind over things we can't control in the least. Like giant peanut-sized silly insects who fly around aimlessly into things, like young ladies hair... and get tangled and then start buzzing/chirping like crazy until they are freed.

Our eyes flashed with nightmarish visions that could come to pass, while Abby pulls her air out by the roots to get the bugs out.

Luckily Abby learned all about them in school, about the life-cycles, and differences amongst regular broods, and Brood-X which will have red eyes! She found the science look at it so interesting, despite it being about something she's terrified of... but it opened up an avenue of curiosity, one that we were able to foster and nurture!

Eventually, she grew more and more comfortable with the cicadas. Stalking the holes they made emerging from the soil, and the shell's left from molting from nymph stage to adult. Vera sadly picked up on Abby's fear, and it was a little harder to overcome over time. Paisley was so curious, and fearless of them!! Except when they would buzz and vibrate occasionally, she would get freaked out. But not deterred! Couldn't hold that kid back.

Out of all 3 kids, Paisley was the fearless one to hold the cicadas. Which I think urged Abby to push her to catch up in the courage department (ha ha). Abby was the second to hold them. Then by the time all of the cicada's had come and practically gone, Vera finally got the courage to hold them. Never the less, an unforgettable summer of memories!
